Downing Family Vineyards is a small family winery located in the world famous Oakville AVA. Winemaker Randy Mason produced Downing’s first vintage in 2001. He also has his own success wine label.
Owners John and Tracy Downing source fruit from several premium vineyards. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is grown by Pelissa, Del Bondido, and Rock Cairn Vineyards. They also buy their Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Franc from Pelissa which is located in the Yountville AVA. They purchase additional Petite Sirah from Blockhouse Vineyard which is also in Yountville.
The Downing Family Vineyards 2004 Syrah was aged in 50% French and 50% American oak. This is a fruit forward wine with toasty and spicy notes. The grapes for this wine were grown by Jim Del Bondido in Oakville.
Their “Fly by Night Zinfandel” is also very popular. Another big wine, it has lower tannins than the Syrah but higher alcohol. The winery also makes limited amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.
