Mark as Favorite

Dono dal Cielo is a Zinfandel producer located in the Sierra Foothills’ Placer County wine region. Owners William and Karen McGillivray recently released their inaugural wine: the 2005 Zinfandel.

In 2001, William and Karen McGillivray bought 10 acres of land in Placer County. They named their estate, Dono dal Cielo, Italian for, “Gift from Heaven.” The following year, the couple began planting 7 acres of Zinfandel as well as about 50 fruit trees.

The winery’s inaugural release was their 2005 Zinfandel. This wine won a Gold Medal at the 2007 Grand Harvest Awards and a Silver Medal at the 2007 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

William and Karen McGillivray have since purchased 20 additional acres and plan to establish more vines in the future. They also have plans produce a “New World Port.” This will be made with grapes harvested at about 30 Brix, and no spirits will be added. Derek Irwin has been the winemaker at Dono dal Cielo since 2006. He previously worked for Viansa Winery and Bouchaine Vineyards.
