Detert Family Vineyards is located on the western side of Highway 29 in the Oakville AVA. Like most of the producers in this famous wine region, they focus on Bordeaux varietals; namely Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Tom Garrett, John Garrett, and Bill Clover are the owners of this premium wine venture. Tom, John, and Bill’s great grandmother bought the land in 1953. When Robert Mondavi established his famous winery in 1966, he bought grapes from the Detert Family for his Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
The property is located on the famed Oakville-Rutherford Bench. Over the years, alluvial deposits have washed down from the Mayacamas Mountains to the edge of the valley floor. The soil is remarkably well drained, and there are few other region’s in the world that have the same reputation for producing Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cabernet Franc has recently become a trendy varietal in California. Amazingly, the land that is now Detert Family Vineyards was planted with this grape in 1949. The winery makes Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, but these wines are in high demand and are very difficult to find.
