Located in Foxen Canyon, in the Santa Ynez Valley, Demetria Estate is 213 acres that was planted between 1990 and 2000 with Rhone varietals. These vines include Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne and Grenache Blanc. Demetria prides itself on its biodynamic farming practices.
Demetria Estate’s vineyards are one of the highest situated vineyards in Santa Ynez Valley. It rests between 1,100 and 1, 450 feet. As a biodynamic agricultural operation, the estate treats the vineyards as one organism and weaves the health of each aspect of the vineyard into a whole philosophy of production. This philosophy is based on the works of Rudolph Steiner who is known also for Waldorf education. Demetria has been one of the leaders of biodynamics in its area.
John Zahoudanis, who was born in Greece, founded Demetria. His family had a small vineyard and made wine every year. However, following World War II and the Greek Civil War, Mr. Zahoudanis’s family relocated to the United States. He never forgot the joy of making wine. Eventually, he and his wife Sandra decided to try their hands at winemaking.
Wine tasting at Demetria is by appointment only, so plan ahead. The vineyard does host private events like weddings, but these occasions are limited. Occasionally, Demetria will host a dinner and movie night on one of the terraces.
