In 2002, Cliff Lede bought the old S. Anderson vineyards with the goal of producing Bordeaux varietals in the Stags Leap AVA. Michelle Edwards is the winemaker and David Abreu manages the vineyard. They made the first Cliff Lede wine in 2001, but the production facility was not completed for another four years.
The grape sorting process is extremely rigorous to ensure that only ripe, high quality fruit is used. Whole berry fermentation is used during the winemaking process to avoid imparting harsh tannins into the final product.
After buying the land, Lede began building his production facility. In 2005, the first vintage was made in this new winery. He also built a 25,000 square foot network of caves to age his wine in. Cliff Lede makes wine under his own label as well as S. Anderson.
