Much of the property that Chimney Rock Winery now sits on was once a golf course. The winery was originally founded in 1980, but its scope was more limited until the Terlato Family acquired the land and production facilities. The Terlatos now own a 137 acre estate in the renowned Stags Leap AVA.
About a decade ago, the golf course surrounding the winery was converted to vineyards. Winemaker Doug Fletcher produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon as well as several other Bordeaux grapes in smaller amounts. Chimney Rock’s Elevage is an excellent red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
With delicious cherry and chocolate flavors, the Chimney Rock 2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent Stags Leap wine. It was aged in 100% French oak for 18 months before bottling. The alcohol level is moderately high at 14.1%, but this vintage has plenty of fruit and smooth tannins for balance.
The Elevage Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris. It has beautiful melon, honey, and floral flavors. The Sauvignon Blanc adds acidity and the Sauvignon Blanc adds body to this cuvee.
