In 1994, George and Caddy Grodahl bought Morningside Vineyard in the Southern Napa Valley’s Yountville AVA. Originally planning on selling their grapes, the couple soon decided to produce their own wine under the Chanticleer label.

George and Caddy Grodahl were intrigued with the Super Tuscan style of wine, and decided to plant 5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5 acres of Sangiovese. Morningside Vineyard is located on rocky, hillside soils in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains.

Chanticleer’s winemaker, Chris Deardon, also runs Benessere Winery. He is an expert at vinifying Italian varietals and is particularly skilled with the difficult Sangiovese grape. He produced 122 cases of the winery’s inaugural vintage in 2000. This wine was a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Sangiovese.

The 2003 Chanticleer Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 94% Cab and 6% Sangiovese. This wine was aged in 75% new French oak for 24 months. The winery’s other most recent release is the 2004 Yountville Sangiovese, but it is already sold out.
