Cedar Mountain Winery is a boutique winery that is in the Livermore Valley AVA. Earl and Linda Ault established the winery in 1990, and have been successful since their first vintage.
Their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is especially noteworthy. But the Ault’s first release was their 1990 Estate Chardonnay. They also produced a small quantity of Cab in this year to test the waters. Cabernet Sauvignon was immediately recognized as Cedar Mountain’s best effort and has retained this position ever since.
Their Estate Cab is remarkably balanced for being a single varietal wine. There is only Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in this wine, as opposed to Cab blends, which are mixtures of Bordeaux varietals. Almost every Estate Bottle Cab that Cedar Mountain has produced has won a medal at a local or state wine competition. This can be attributed to the vineyard that produces the grapes used for the wine.
Adjacent to the winery is their 14 acre estate vineyard. Known as Blanches Vineyard, it is situated at the east end of the valley, and lies on a south-facing hill. The soil is composed of a mix of gravel and clay; it has just enough organic matter for balanced Cab berries. Cedar Mountain takes great pride in Blanches Vineyard. Through extensive pruning, the vines produce only three tons of fruit per acre.
