Carneros Creek Winery - Mahoney Vineyards

In 1972, Carneros Creek Winery was established by Francis and Kathy Mahoney. They set out to produce Pinot Noir that could compete with Burgundy. Since then, they have been one of the pioneers in the AVA's re-birth.

Owned by Francis Mahoney, Carneros Creek is located in an idyllic setting. The southern tip Mayacamas Mountains is the eastern backdrop of Carneros Creek’s very nice tasting room and winery.
The Carneros Creek watershed is much hillier than the flats near the San Pablo Bay. Temperatures are warmer here, and Merlot does particularly well. Pinot Noir is very good too; these grapes make weightier wines than those from the south. ands leading to San Pablo Bay that make up the majority of the region.
Francis Mahoney and winemaker Ken Foster use small fermentation tanks with open tops. They ferment small vineyard lots and then barrel age each one separately before blending their final product. These costly production techniques are evident in their Pinot’s finesse and balance.
Their Las Brisas Vineyard Pinot Noir is my favorite Carneros Creek wine. For a Pinot, it has a lot of body and is quite weighty on the palate. But it has enough fruit for it to work very well. There is a bit of anise and licorice on the lengthy finish.
