Carina Cellars is named for one of the star clusters of the Argo Navis constellation. Carina Cellars sources its Rhone style grapes from vineyards on the Central Coast. David Hardee and Joey Tensley decided to partner their talents and start Carina Cellars. Mr. Hardee is an attorney and businessman. Mr. Tensley is a winemaker. The winery produces about 2,000 cases per year.

Carina Cellars’ proprietors seek out grapes from growers who reflect their ideas on farming. Vineyards that operate on traditional and minimalist ideals are good fits for the Carina label. Originally the wines were produced in a winery associated with Joe Tensley’s other effort, Tensley Wines in Buellton. The focus was on Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have started to be obtained from Napa Valley. In 2008, construction was begun on a new estate facility in Paso Robles. This property is known as Rancho del Cielo.

Carina Cellars is focusing on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. White wines include Grenache Blanc and Viognier. Several blends that are traditional to the Rhone region are produced. Tastings are available at two locations. A tasting room is available in downtown Los Olivos as well as the Paso Robles winery, Paso Robles Estate Vineyard & Winery at Rancho del Cielo.
