In 1992, restaurateur Michael Ouellette founded Blockheadia Wines in the St Helena AVA. The name refers to the fact that all of the wines are made from small “blocks” of vineyards.
Before starting his winery, Ouellette was the wine director and managing partner of Mustard’s Grill in the Oakville AVA. He is still involved in the restaurant industry and brings a highly developed palate to his winemaking venture.
Ouellette makes his wines at Beaucanon Winery which is also located in St Helena. His current releases are the 2002 Napa Valley Zinfandel and the 2003 Mendocino Petite Sirah. All of the grapes are hand harvested for the winery’s 2,000 case annual production.
The 2002 Napa Valley Zinfandel is a blend of 90% Zinfandel and 10% Petite Sirah. It was aged in seasoned French oak. 280 cases of this wine were produced. The 2003 Mendocino Petite Sirah is a blend of 95% Petite Sirah and 5% Syrah. It was aged in seasoned French oak. 150 cases of this wine were produced.
