Black Sears Vineyard sits at 2,400 feet above sea level in the Howell Mountain AVA. The property was originally planted with Zinfandel in 1975. In 1980, Jerre and Joyce Black Sears bought the vineyard and winery. They planted 5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1985.
Before making their own wine, Black Sears Vineyard sold grapes to several premium Napa Valley wineries. These included Turley, Howell Mountain Vineyards, Elyse, Cornerstone, and D Cubed.
In 1997, Jerre and Joyce Black Spears produced their first wine at Ted Lemon’s Littorai Wines production facility. The partnership was advantageous for both parties and Lemon has been the winemaker and vineyard manager for Black Sears ever since.
The winery produces estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Yields are very low and the grapes express the rustic, stressed conditions by making full bodied wines. Only a few hundred cases of wine are made each year.
