Located in the Lodi AVA, the Stokes Family owns Benson Ferry Vineyards. They have been farming in the Sacramento Delta for 3 generations and specialize in Zinfandel, Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Port-style wine.

Bill Stokes Sr. planted the family’s first 45 acres of Zinfandel back in 1954. His son, Tom, continued in his father’s footsteps until his own two sons, Mike and Bill, took the reigns in 1985. The Stokes Family currently owns 2,000 acres of land, and they continue to acquire more properties.

The Benson Ferry Vineyards 2002 Chardonnay has classic apple and citrus flavors complemented by a bit tropical fruit which suggests kiwi. The winery’s 2003 Pinot Gris is another delicious, yet unpretentious white wine.

Mike and Bill Stokes also produce Old Vine Zinfandel with grapes from the vineyard their grandfather originally planted. This is a fruit forward wine with light tannins. Rarely a varietal to benefit from much age, Benson Ferry recommends enjoying this wine right now.
