In 1994, Tom Beckmen founded Beckmen Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. His son, Steve, previously worked for Jeff Newton and is currently the head winemaker. He focuses on producing wines with Rhone varietals with special attention to Syrah.
The Beckmen 1999 Atelier is made with 67% Cabernet Franc and 33% Merlot. The Cab Franc adds mineral notes to the fruit flavors of the Merlot.
The 2001 Syrah Purisima Mountain Vineyard is an unbelievable wine that is one of the best Syrahs I have ever tasted. Jammy and peppery, it shows what the Santa Ynez Valley is capable of.
Beckmen’s 2001 Estate Syrah is another great wine that is very affordable. Its spice and oak blend very nicely with refreshing acidity. Their Grenache is also very enjoyable. This is a great wine to be consumed in its youth.
