Au Bon Climat has a reputation for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. The winery’s estate vineyards are located on a 900 acre property in the gentle rolling hills of Santa Maria Valley.
20 miles away, the Pacific Ocean’s fog and breeze has a cooling effect on the vineyard. This gives their grapes longer hang time and more complex flavors. Au Bon Climat also sources fruit from the renowned Bien Nacido Vineyard. The soil of this property is composed of gravel and calciferous clay.
The genius behind Au Bon Climat is in the winemaking of owner Jim Clendenen. He was named winemaker of the year in 1992 by the Los Angeles Times, and then again almost 10 years later by Food and Wine Magazine in 2001. In addition to Pinot Noir, Clendenen is known for his Chardonnay as well as two distinctive white blends.
