In 1968, Marvin and Judith Atchley moved to Spring Mountain from the San Francisco Bay Area. They wanted to get away from the fast paced city life and were attracted to the beauty of Napa Valley. Marvin began planting Atchley Vineyard with Chardonnay two years later. He and Judith had already been making wine in their garage for some time.
Irrigation was always an issue until Marvin tapped the nearby Mill Creek. In 1993, Atchley replanted the vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a little bit of Petit Verdot.
Wine from Atchley Vineyard is labeled Limestone Cave in commemoration of a cave on the property that was dug by Chinese laborers in the 1880s. Marvin and Judith make their wine at neighboring Ritchie Creek Vineyard.
Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard are also sold to Bennett Lane in the nearby town of Calistoga. These grapes are used in the Bennett Lane Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the winery’s Spring Mountain Meritage blend.
