Artesa Winery

In 1997, Codorniu Napa was renamed Artesa Winery. The Codorniu Family has been making wine for an astounding 15 generations. Their philosophy is, "Our roots are in Carneros, but our reach is long."

Artesa Winery is located just north of Carneros Creek Winery on Dealy Lane. In 1997, Artesa underwent a $10 million dollar renovation financed by the venerable Codorniu Family. Their ancestors began making wine in 16th century Spain.
The winery is located in the Carneros Creek watershed. This is a small valley in the northeast part of the Carneros. It is more sheltered and warmer than the majority of the AVA.
Winemaker Dave Dobson is best known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. He uses grapes from Artesa’s estate vineyard and also buys fruit from several different growers. At the heart Dobson’s winemaking philosophy is “style by appellation.” Each appellation produces a different grape in terms of flavor, acidity, sugar content and tannins.
Artesa recently acquired over 400 acres of land planted with about 150 acres of vines in Alexander Valley. They also own 300 acres of land planted with 100 acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Albarino in the Sonoma Coast AVA.

I thought their sweet Gewurztraminer dessert wine was the most outstanding of the 10+ I tasted in their fantastic room atop the Carneros this September.
