In 1997, Rick Hutchinson established Amphora in the Dry Creek Valley AVA. He is also the winemaker, as well as the creator of the amphorae that grace the winery’s labels. Hutchinson began his career working for Sebastiani Vineyards in 1975. He is a specialist at rootstock and clonal selections.
For his first vintage, Hutchinson produced Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. These two grapes have since expanded to five including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
The grapes used to make Amphora Wines are grown in Mounts Vineyard in the western part of Dry Creek Valley. The Zinfandel vines on this property are about 40 years old. But it is Hutchinson’s Petite Sirah that is really head-turning. This wine has a huge flavor profile, and pairs well with BBQ.
