A long-time fixture in Napa Valley, Frank Altamura has been in the wine industry for over 3 decades. He began his career working for Ric Forman at Sterling Vineyards, and later worked for Caymus Vineyards. Since he began his own venture, Mr. Altamura has gained a following for Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.
The winery’s 400 acre estate is planted with 65 acres of vineyards at elevations ranging between 700 and 1,000 feet above sea level. The property’s soil profile is quite diverse, and there are also a range of microclimates suited for different clones and rootstocks.
Most of the vines are comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, but there are also 5 acres of Sangiovese planted as well as a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc and the relatively rare Nebbiolo varietal from the Piedmont region of Northwestern Italy.
The 2003 Altamura Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a very deeply colored wine with dark fruit flavors and blackberries, currants, and black cherries. This wine was aged in oak and has toasty flavors as a result. 3,500 cases were produced. Altamura’s other current release is the 2003 Napa Valley Sangiovese.
