California Semillon

California Semillon is generally milder than examples of the grape from other parts of the world. In the years after Prohibition, Semillon almost entirely vanished in America as a recognized varietal.
What little production existed was hidden in generic, undistinguished blends. Livermore, Paso Robles, and Napa Valley are probably the most consistent producers of the varietal in the Golden State.
Napa Valley Semillon was virtually unknown before the 1980s, but currently does very well in the north part of the Yountville AVA to the Southern part of the Oakville. It also thrives in other niches around the valley.
The Livermore Valley AVA produces some very good Semillon. Charles Wetmore originally planted Semillon in the Arroyo de Mocho during the 1880s. These were cuttings from Chateau d’Yquem.
Wente Vineyards currently own these hallowed, yet underappreciated vines. You can purchase this piece of history only at Wente’s tasting room. They make about 3,000 cases annually. Kalin and Ahlgren both purchase some of this fruit from Wente.
