California Muscat

Most California Muscat is Muscat of Alexandria, although there is quite a bit of Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains as well. Much of the Muscat of Alexandria is being uprooted because yields are far too high and the grape loses its aroma.

Muscat is widely planted in the Central Valley and is grown as table grapes or made into raisins. The varietal is also distilled into brandy in the Golden State.

In California, Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains is often labeled as Muscat Canelli, Muscat Frontignan, and most commonly, Muscat Blanc. On the nose, these wines have perfume and musky aromas. There are also some lighter versions consumed as aperitifs as well as some sparklers.
