Sonoma Valley Wineries (Back to overview)

Sonoma Valley wineries are located in the southeastern corner of Sonoma County. The valley runs north south, and opens near the San Pablo Bay in the southern part of the AVA. The climate of the valley varies considerably and is much warmer in the north.

Gundlach Bundschu

In 1850, Jacob Gundlach left Germany to immigrate to America. Upon arrival in San Francisco, he immediately founded the Bavaria Brewery. Along with Emil Dresel, Gundlach bought over 400 acres of land in Sonoma Valley.

Chateau St Jean

Chateau St Jean was founded in 1973 and is one of the most recognizable Sonoma Valley wineries. The winery sources many of its grapes from some of the best vineyards in Sonoma County. They are most famous for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, but produce many other varietals.

Valley of the Moon Winery

Valley of the Moon Winery has a long history of wine production in Sonoma County. In the 1863, George Whitman began planting grapes and built a winery on the property. At his peak, he was producing 50,000 gallons of wine and 2,000 gallons of brandy a year.

St Francis Winery

In 1979, Joe Martin and Lloyd Canton established St Francis Winery in Sonoma Valley. At the time, Joe and Emma Martin had been selling grapes from Behler Ranch Vineyard for 8 years.

Kenwood Vineyards

In 1970, Kenwood Vineyards was established in the Sonoma Valley AVA. Located in the old Pagani Brothers Building, the winery is surrounded by 22 acres of estate vineyards.

Whitmore Wine Company

Whitmore Wine Company is based in Sonoma Valley, but vinifies grapes from several different California AVAs. The company’s mission is to produce high-quality wines in the $10-$15 range that offer excellent value.

Bucklin Old Hill Ranch Winery

Bucklin Old Hill Ranch Winery is one of the most historic vineyards in the Sonoma Valley AVA. Located in the town of Glen Ellen, the property is planted with some extremely old Zinfandel vines.

Established in 1984, B.R. Cohn Winery is located in the Sonoma Valley AVA. In addition to running his winery, Bruce Cohn is also the long-time manager of the Doobie Brothers.

In 1986, Richard Arrowood founded Arrowood Vineyards and Winery. He brought an impressive resume to his new venture in the eastern hills of the Sonoma Valley AVA.

Deerfield Ranch Winery

Deerfield Ranch Winery is located in the northern part of Sonoma Valley. In 1982, PJ and Robert Rex purchased their vineyards. They bonded their winemaking facilities in 1996.

Landmark Vineyards

Originally established in 1974 in Windsor, Landmark Vineyards was purchased in 1989 by Damaris Deer Etheridge. Etheridge, the great, great, granddaughter of the American agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere, relocated the vineyard to its present day home in Kenwood, Sonoma.
