Sonoma Coast Climate (Back to overview)

The Sonoma Coast has a cool climate. The region gets a lot of rainfall. The Sonoma Coast AVA is located adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in Western Sonoma County.

The Effect of Climate on Sonoma Coast Vineyards

Vineyards are planted on elevated ridges throughout the AVA. This keeps them above the fog much of the time so grapes can ripen in the coastal sun. These elevated properties are often less foggy than more inland parts of Sonoma County. But they are still very close to the Pacific Ocean and exposed to cooling winds.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the name of the game here. Syrah and Riesling are also planted. The AVA does not have a lot of wineries, but contains several thousand acres of highly valued vineyards.
