Knights Valley Climate (Back to overview)

Knights Valley is located in Northeastern Sonoma County. Because of its sheltered, inland location, the AVA is the warmest in Sonoma County.

The Climate of Knights Valley Vineyards

Several mountain ranges prevent any moderating, coastal influence from affecting the viticultural area’s climate. The AVA is located one mountain range east of the Alexander Valley and to the west of Mount St Helena. Warm afternoons typically cool substantially in the evening. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely grown varietal in the AVA.

Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Mourvedre are grown to a lesser extent. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the most planted white varietals. Sauvignon Blanc fully ripens in the warm region producing wines with melon and tropical fruit aromas and flavors.

The region will likely gain a higher profile as arable land suitable for high quality vineyards becomes increasingly scarce in Sonoma County. It will certainly have a niche growing the warmest weather varietals.
