Chalk Hill Climate (Back to overview)

Chalk Hill has many microclimates that are planted with several different varietals. The eastern part of the AVA is quite elevated and warm, while the west is more similar to Russian River Valley.

The Effect of Climate on Chalk Hill Grape Growing

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese are right at home on the sunny hillsides. The highest elevations are mainly reserved for Bordeaux grapes. All six of the wineries are located in this part of Chalk Hill.

As one travels west toward the Russian River, the elevation decreases, soils have more alluvial influence and temperatures begin to drop. This part of the AVA is exposed to varying levels of fog from year to year.

These less predictable weather patterns translate to a wider range of varietals on the lower slopes. While white varietals including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Pinot Grigio thrive in this part of the region, there are also Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plantings.
