Santa Ynez Valley Terrain (Back to overview)

The terrain, topography, and soils of Santa Ynez Valley is a major consideration of local wine producers. Los Olivos is a charming town in the center of the AVA.
The Soil & Terrain of Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country
The Santa Ynez Mountains are located south of the AVA and run roughly east-west. They affectively block coastal influence from entering much of the valley except for a relatively narrow opening to the northwest.
Soils in the coastal parts of the AVA are reminiscent of a time when the ocean covered the region. Much of the earth is relatively unfertile due to the abundant fossilized sea-life in the soils. Yields are relatively low and high quality.
At nearby Point Conception, the coastline turns predominantly east-west. Ocean temperatures are much warmer, there is less fog and air temperatures are warmer. Agricultural crops are more tropical southeast of Point Conception.

what a terrific escape for the fall, but i can see how the summer might see the place overrun. nonetheless, it's far more enjoyable than temecula, and so close to LA. a lot of nebbiolos up there (although i much prefer cabs).

I know how you feel, its heading in the Napa Valley "Disneyland" style atmosphere. I would much rather have intimate tasting experiences with friends.

I love tasting in the Santa Ynez Valley. I've been going there for ten years. It's always been a little piece of heaven for me. The post-"Sideways" boost helps the economy, but the weekend crowds make it tough to enjoy many wineries in one day.
