Santa Rita Hills Terrain (Back to overview)

The terrain of the Santa Rita Hills is distinct from the larger Santa Ynez Valley AVA. Vineyards are grown in alluvial soils throughout much of Santa Ynez Valley. In the Santa Rita Hills, soils are made up of different types of loams with sand and silt deposits.

The Soil & Terrain of Santa Rita Hills Vineyards

While soils in the eastern hills of the Santa Ynez Valley also have a lot of loam, they contain more clay as well as larger, gravelly debris than soils in the Santa Rita Hills.

The Pacific Ocean does not only influence the climate of the AVA, but also its soils. Ancient marine debris and eroding sand dunes are present throughout the Santa Rita Hills. Watersheds and creeks in the region have more recently deposited some alluvium into the soils, but far less than in the Santa Ynez Valley.
