Spring Mountain Wineries (Back to overview)

Spring Mountain wineries are located in the northwestern hills of Napa Valley, above the town of St Helena. Notable producers include Cain Vineyard, Smith Madrone, and Paloma Vineyard.
Fantesca Estate
Fantesca Estate is a small Napa Valley winery that was established by Duane and Susan Hoff in 2002. They produce an Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain and Chardonnay from Carneros.
Kongsgaard
Kongsgaard is a Napa Valley Chardonnay specialist. The winery also makes a small amount of Syrah, Viognier, and Roussanne. The Kongsgaard 2003 Napa Valley Chardonnay was ranked #8 on Wine Spectator’s 2006 Top 100 list.
Pride Mountain Vineyards
In 1990, Pride Mountain Vineyards was established by Jim and Carolyn Pride. Unfortunately, Mr. Pride passed away recently after a lengthy fight with cancer. His wife Carolyn and their children, Steven and Suzanne, are continuing his legacy.
Spring Mountain Vineyard
Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 845 hillside property planted with 226 acres of vineyards. The elevation of the property ranges from 400 to 1,450 feet above sea level.
Juslyn Vineyards
In 1997, Perry and Carolyn Butler founded Juslyn Vineyards. They made their first 80 cases of wine during the 2001 vintage. Oscar Renteria is the vineyard manager and Craig MacClean is the winemaker.
Newton Vineyard
Newton Vineyard is a striking group of terraced vines in the Spring Mountain AVA. Dr. Su Hua and Peter Newton are the owners of the property. Su Hua is also the winemaker.
Robert Keenan Vineyards
Robert Keenan Vineyards is on land that was initially planted with grapes in the late 19th century. But its true potential was not unlocked until Mr. Keenan acquired the land in 1974. Since then, the property has been producing wines with big, bold flavors.
St Clement
St Clement is located in the Spring Mountain AVA west of Highway 29. The property has been planted with vines since the late 19th century. The tasting room is in a striking hillside building.
Frias Family Winery
Frias Family Vineyard was the result of Manny Frias Sr.'s dream to retire in a beautiful Napa Mountain home. His son, Manny Jr., produces a small amount of excellent Cabernet Sauvignon.
Philip Togni Vineyard
At an elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level, Philip Togni Vineyard is one of the highest properties in the Spring Mountain AVA. The winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon and a sweet red wine that is made with the obscure Black Hamburgh grape.
Smith Madrone
In 1971, Stuart Smith founded Smith Madrone Winery. His brother Charles joined him two years later. Together, they built on of the premium wineries in the Spring Mountain AVA.
Sherwin Family Vineyards
Sherwin Family Vineyards produces an excellent Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. All of the grapes used to make this wine were grown on the Sherwin Family’s estate vineyard perched high in the Spring Mountain AVA.
Guilliams Vineyards
In 1978, John and Shawn Guilliams arrived in the Napa Valley and began plans for their Spring Mountain vineyard. They planted 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc.
Vineyard 7 & 8
In 1999, John & Louise Steffens established Vineyard 7 & 8 with the goal of producing the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay possible. The property is located at an elevation of 2,020 feet above sea level.
Cain Vineyard
In 1985, Cain Vineyard was established by Joyce and Jerry Cain. The winery is famous for its Cain Five blend of the traditional red Bordeaux varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
Hollywood & Vine
Formerly an actor, director, and screen writer, Doug Barr moved from Hollywood to the Napa Valley in the mid 1990s. He partnered with Bruce Orosz to create Hollywood & Vine.
Stony Hill Vineyard
In 1943, Fred and Eleanor McCrea purchased 160 acres in the northwestern hills of the Napa Valley. In 1947, they began planting their Chardonnay vines at a time when there was only 200 acres of the grape in California.
Terra Valentine
Angus and Margaret Wurtele are the owners of Terra Valentine. Mr. Wurtele is a proven businessman who now applies his skills to the wine industry. He focuses on producing mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
Atchley Vineyard
In 1968, Marvin Atchley bought 20 acres in the Spring Mountain wine region. established Atchley Vineyard on the old site of Moding Winery. He was previously a manager in the Scientific Computer Center of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
Behrens and Hitchcock Winery
Behrens and Hitchcock Winery started in a basement in Humboldt County. In 1993, Les Behrens and Joe Bob Hitchcock made their first 175 cases of wine.
Barnett Vineyards
Founded in 1983, Barnett Vineyards has stunning views of the valley floor. Their vineyards produce intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon.
OnThEdge Winery
OnThEdge Winery is literally “on the edge” of ridge that separates Napa Valley from Sonoma County. It is located in the Western Mayacamas Mountain high in the Spring Valley AVA.
Lynch Vineyards
Lynch Vineyards is a small property in the northwestern hills of the Napa Valley. The 18 acre estate is planted with 5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Dan Lynch also produces Chardonnay with grapes from Chiles Valley.
Marston Family Vineyard
Michael and Alexandra Marston purchased Menasco Ranch over 3 decades ago. Although they have been long-time fixtures in the Napa Valley, they did not begin producing their estate wines until 1998.
Peacock Family Vineyard
While many California wineries are constantly experimenting with new varietals, Peacock Family Vineyard does one thing very well: producing a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Spring Mountain wine region.
Trahan Winery
In 2001, Chuck Custodio started making wine in the Spring Mountain AVA. He bonded Trahan Winery in 2004, and soon released his inaugural 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Paloma Vineyard
The land that is now Paloma Vineyard was originally planted over a century ago. The old vineyard was abandoned for decades, but some 100 year old Zinfandel vines survived.
Ritchie Creek Vineyard
Ritchie Creek Vineyard produces 800 cases of wine each year from 8 acres of estate grapes. Owners Pete and Maggie Minor are best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, but also make Merlot, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Chardonnay, and an Austrian varietal called Blaufrankisch.
York Creek Vineyards
York Creek Vineyards is located in the Western Mayacamas Mountains of the Napa Valley. In the early 1990s, owner Fritz Maytag wisely hired Cathy Corison to make his wines.
Schweiger Vineyards
In 1960, Tony and Theresa Schweiger purchased 53 acres in the northwestern hills above the Napa Valley. There son, Fred, bought an additional 8 acres the following year. But it would be 2 decades before Schweiger Vineyards was established.
School House Vineyard
School House Vineyard is located at the intersection of Spring Mountain Road and Langtry Road. Although the Napa Valley is filled with beautiful scenery, this area is particularly stunning.
Domaine Charbay
Known as, “The Still on the Hill," Domaine Charbay produces wine, brandy, rum, and vodka. The Karakasevic Family has been distilling beverages in Europe since the 1750s.

I think Spring Mountain is an underrated region. Its not as we known as Oakville or Rutherford, but Spring Mountain Cab is to die for.
