Spring Mountain History (Back to overview)

The history of Spring Mountain wine production began in 1873. In this year, a German immigrant named Charles Lemme bought about 70 acres from Jacob Schram. Schram had recently established Schramsberg Vineyards.

Spring Mountain History and Modern Wine Production

Lemme planted a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard and established La Perla Cellar. In 1885, Jacob and Frederick Beringer planted a 60 acre vineyard in the region. The property is now known as Beringer Flat.

Tiburico Parrot was another early vintner who arrived in the early 1890s. He produced distinguished wines that won several national and international awards. In 1891, Fortune Chevalier built an impressive winery that he named, Chateau Chevalier. It is currently owned by Jacob Safra. Peter Conradi owned over 100 acres of Zinfandel and Syrah during these early years.

As with most California wine regions, Phylloxera and Prohibition devastated local wine production. The renaissance was led by Fred and Eleanor McCrea. In 1946, they established Stony Hill Vineyard. Several other quality wineries were started during the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1971, Stuart Smith founded Smith Madrone Vineyards and Winery. The Frias Family bought 100 acres on the mountain in 1977. They planted 5 acres of vineyards in 1985. AVA status was granted to Spring Mountain in 1991.

I think Spring Mountain is an underrated region. Its not as we known as Oakville or Rutherford, but Spring Mountain Cab is to die for.
