Oakville

Oakville Wineries are in the heart of the Valley's wine industry, and its name is synonymous with quality. There are approximately 5,000 acres of vineyards in Oakville Wine Country. Wine tours are extremely popular in the region; especially along Highway 29.
Oakville Wine Country
Oakville wineries have gained worldwide recognition for their production of fine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Some of Oakville’s best wineries include Opus One, Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Silver Oak Winery and Rudd Winery.
Oakville Wine is produced in a warm climate north of the Yountville Mounts. These hills block much of the fog and wind from the San Pablo Bay from advancing North. This gives grapes time to ripen and develop their distinctive varietal characteristics that Oakville Wineries are known for.
There are several distinct terrains in Oakville Wine Country that support many different grapes. Alluvial benches border the valley walls on the both sides of the AVA. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Zinfandel are planted in these areas. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are common on the valley floor.
Oakville Wineries have a distinguished history of wine production. Hamilton Walker Crabb was the first to plant vineyards in the region. In 1868, he bought 240 acres of land and began planting To Kalon Vineyard. By 1880, there were over 400 acres of vineyards in Oakville Wine Country.
