Mount Veeder Terrain (Back to overview)

The terrain of Mount Veeder is ideal for growing rustic, mountain grapes. The AVA's topsoil is relatively thin, unfertile and well drained. Roots extend deep into the ground in search of water pockets in the rocky earth.

The Effect of Terrain on Mount Veeder Wine Production

The results are stressed vines with a low grape output. The traditional red Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot are widely planted in these soils.

Vineyards on the mountain produce a limited amount of thick-skinned grapes that have remarkable flavor concentration. Robert Craig Wine Cellars produces an excellent Cab from this terrain.

Unlike many wine regions, winemakers from Mount Veeder have flavor to spare. Their goal is to balance the naturally concentrated flavors with other components. The best red wines from the region are able to extract these opulent flavors without being overly tannic. Mount Veeder Winery has historically risen to this challenge successfully.
