Howell Mountain Wineries (Back to overview)

Away from the bustling Highway 29, several Howell Mountain wineries quietly produce outstanding wines. Like most of Napa’s hillside regions, Cabernet Sauvignon is king in the AVA.
Lail Vineyards
Lail Vineyards is made by a family whose winemaking roots in the Napa Valley go back more than 100 years. Owner Robin Lail is the great great grandniece of Gustave Niebaum and the daughter of John Daniel Jr., both of whom were legendary owners of Inglenook in Rutherford.
Howell at the Moon
Howell at the Moon is a relatively new winery that produced its first vintage in 2004. Owner Mark Cohen makes a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from his vineyard on Howell Mountain.
Howell Mountain Vineyards
Howell Mountain Vineyards was established in 1988 by Mike Beatty, Joyce Sears, and Jerre Sears. Mike Beatty also owns Beatty Ranch Vineyards, and Joyce and Jerre Sears own Black Sears Vineyard.
Robert Craig Wine Cellars
Robert Craig Wine Cellars uses grapes from three distinct vineyards for their award winning Cabs. These wines are consistently age worthy, but also pleasant on release.
Cornerstone Cellars
Cornerstone Cellars has been making mountain wines in the Napa Valley since their inaugural vintage in 1991. Founders Michael Dragutsky and David Sloas were both physicians living in Memphis, Tennessee when they made the fateful decision to buy 4.8 tons of Cabernet Sauvignon from Randy Dunn.
Ladera Vineyards
Ladera Vineyards focuses on two mountain Cabernet Sauvignons. The Lone Canyon Cab is a single vineyard, estate wine from the Mount Veeder AVA. Ladera also makes a Cabernet Sauvignon from their Howell Mountain Vineyard.
Lamborn Family Vineyard
Lamborn Family Vineyard was founded in 1971, and makes a small amount of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon from their mountain vines. The venerable Heidi Barrett is their winemaker.
Spence Vineyards
The goal of Spence Vineyards is to produce handcrafted wines that pay homage to the terroir of the grapes. After producing a number of non-commercial, homemade wines, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon marks the inaugural vintage offered to the public.
Summit Lake Vineyards
Summit Lake Vineyards is known for its mountain grown Zinfandel. The winery also produces a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a Port-style wine with Zinfandel.
White Cottage Ranch
White Cottage Ranch is a small winery on Howell Mountain in the northeastern hills of the Napa Valley. Owners Dennis and Adele Johns produce small amounts of handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, and a blend of Zinfandel and Sangiovese.
Bravante Vineyards
Bravante Vineyards takes considerable care throughout the grape growing and winemaking process to make some truly remarkable mountain vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon.
La Jota Vineyard
In the late 19th century, Frederick Hess established La Jota Vineyard on Howell Mountain. After a long dormancy following Prohibition, Bill and Joan Smith revived the property during the 1970s. Jess Jackson is currently owns La Jota.
O'Shaughnessy Estate Winery
In 1996, O’Shaughnessy Estate Winery was established in the hills of Napa Valley. The vineyard is planted in red volcanic soils on south-facing slopes in the Howell Mountain AVA.
Viader
Established in 1989, Viader is located in the Howell Mountain AVA. The winery specializes in a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that is made in the St. Emilion style.
Black Sears Vineyard
Black Sears Vineyard and Winery is located in the northern part of the Howell Mountain AVA. Ted Lemon is the winemaker and produces small amounts of Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.
Chateau Woltner
Chateau Woltner is a ghost winery that has been refurbished by Pat and Anne Stotesbery. The property was originally developed by Adolphe Brun and Jean Chaix during the late 19th century.
Atalon Winery
Atalon Winery is owned by Kendall Jackson and sources grapes from all over the Napa Valley. Like most Howell Mountain wineries, they focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Atalon’s wines are made in limited quantities at very fair prices.
DR Stephens Estate
Located on Howell Mountain, the 35 acre DR Stephens Estate is owned by Don and Trish Stephens. The winery produces an estate Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay with grapes from Hudson Vineyard in the Carneros AVA.
Dunn Vineyards
Esteemed Napa Valley winemaker Randy Dunn is the mastermind behind Dunn Vineyards. Dunn originally established his reputation at Caymus, and helped develop the style of their Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon.
Neal Family Vineyards
Neal Family Vineyards produces Cabernet Sauvignon with fruit grown in Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Coombsville, Rutherford, and St Helena. Mark J. Neal either owns or manages each of the vineyards that he gets grapes from.
Retro Cellars
Owned by Mike and Kara Dunn, Retro Cellars is a cult producer of Petite Sirah. They make this wine with grapes from the Muscatine Vineyard located high on Howell Mountain.
Piedra Hill Vineyard
Piedra Hill Vineyard was established by Bill and Joan Smith. The couple also owns La Jota Vineyards in the Howell Mountain AVA and W.H. Smith in the Sonoma Coast AVA.
Outpost Wines
Outpost Wines include Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Grenache from 100% organically farmed estate grapes. The vineyard is located in Napa Valley’s Howell Mountain AVA.
