Monterey County Wine Country

The Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is on the western bench of Salinas Valley. This region consists of a series of terraced, hillside vineyards that are known for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Summer afternoons are typically sunny, but are cooled by coastal winds from the Pacific Ocean. This AVA is one of the best places to visit Monterey County Wineries.

Just east is the Chalone AVA, which is warmer than most other regions in Monterey County Wine Country. Located near the Pinnacles National Monument, soils are made of decomposed granite and limestone. During the growing season, temperatures can swing over 50 degrees from day to night. This poses a difficult task for Monterey County Wineries.

Despite its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Carmel Valley’s elevation protects it from the fog that regularly blankets coastal parts of the Valley. Monterey Wineries for this AVA are known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

If you take a tour through Southern Monterey County Wine Country, you’ll reach the Arroyo Seco AVA. Monterey Wineries in the region are characterized by their sheltered location. Grapes grown in well-drained, gravelly soils that are the result of ancient alluvial debris from the surrounding hills.
