Clarksburg History (Back to overview)

Bogle Winery was the first of the 4 current wineries to be established in Clarksburg. In 1968, Warren and Chris Bogle planted 20 acres of vineyards in the region. The winery has since expanded to either owning or managing over 1200 acres.

The History of Clarksburg’s Wine Country

The AVA was established in 1984, and the region’s winegrowers association was founded shortly thereafter in 1987. It has 44 growers who sell grapes to over 30 different wineries. Most of the members are small family farmers who have lived in the area for several generations.

Peter, Richelle, and Norman Marks (son, wife, and father) of Six hands Winery have been making wines in the region since the mid 1990s. However, they have only recently begun to produce their wines commercially. It remains a small, high-quality winery that makes a Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2000, Steve Plyman founded River Grove Winery. Mr. Plyman owns 300 acres in the AVA and makes 5 different wines. As American wine tastes continue to develop a liking for terroir specific varietals, Clarksburg will become a larger force in the California Wine Industry.
